What happened
The CNCF has announced OpenTofu Day, a single-track event on 9 November 2026 in Salt Lake City, co-located with KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America. Core maintainers attend all day, and teams running OpenTofu in production share what they have learned. The CNCF says OpenTofu is now a Sandbox project with more than 10 million downloads, and recent releases added client-side state encryption, for_each on provider configurations and OCI registry support.
Why it matters
If you run Terraform today, the event is a reminder that the licensing change of 2023 still leaves a decision on your desk. According to the CNCF, swapping the CLI is the easy part, because OpenTofu is designed as a drop-in replacement for Terraform. The harder question is everything around it: pipelines, state management, policy and access controls.
For a team without a platform team, that is where the risk sits. You can keep your current workflows and replace only the engine, or use the move to redesign how infrastructure changes ship. The first is quicker and less disruptive. The second takes more effort but may leave you with a cleaner setup. Neither is right for everyone.
The source also notes that the questions people ask have shifted from whether to migrate towards how to scale and operate it. That suggests many teams have already made the move, and their experience is worth reading.
What to do this week
- List where Terraform runs today: laptops, CI jobs, a hosted service. Note who can apply changes and how.
- Check how your state is stored, who can read it and whether it is backed up.
- Decide which path fits: engine swap only, or a wider redesign. Write down the reasons.
- Try OpenTofu on a small, non-critical stack and review the plan output against what Terraform produces.
- If you cannot attend, look for talks and write-ups from the event on migration trade-offs, and share them with your team.
Need a hand?
Planning a Terraform to OpenTofu move, or tidying the pipelines and state around it, is a core part of our Infrastructure as Code work. We can help you choose between a simple engine swap and a bigger redesign, and keep the change low-risk. The first call is free and is with an engineer.
